Statement
I am a photographer, cultural anthropologist, filmmaker, and painter who works with acrylics and inks and relies heavily on abstract expression. As a photographer I produce digital collages printed on paper and aluminum boards and when I create figurative work it centers Black people, particularly women and children. I also create paper collages and mixed media work incorporating my deconstructed paintings, found objects and other forms of cut paper.Liminality is a pervasive theme in my artistic practice. “In between” spaces reflect the complexity of our human existence including our experiences with oppression and the ways people resist domination. One way I depict liminality is by creating beautiful works that speak to ugly incidents and damaging conditions. The specific pieces submitted for this call address ongoing political struggles taking place in my home town of Washington, DC. These particular works highlight long standing battles for statehood and affordable housing, as well as present-day resistance to the presence of immigration enforcement units and the national guard on city streets.
